Personal Training
Learning how to move our bodies properly is one of the most underrated skills. I have worked with dozens of people (especially women and non-binary folks) who have never been taught how to engage certain muscles, much less be able to use them in an exercise. And that included athletes too! I have lost count of the body builders and high-level athletes who couldn’t properly engage basic muscle groups. The issue is when we are not taught how our bodies work, we are more prone to injury and regular activities (like going up stairs, walking the dog, getting off the floor, etc.) become harder because we are not using our bodies to their full potential.
My approach to personal training is not to help you bulk up or lose weight. My goal is to help you move confidently in your daily life. You get to decide what that means. Maybe that looks like getting back to your favorite sport after an injury. Maybe that looks like going up a flight of stairs without pain. Maybe that looks like easily getting your walker in and out of the car. I am not interested in you meeting some arbitrary goal, like a number on a scale - I am interested in you improving your function so you can live your life with more ease. This is especially true for people with disabilities or chronic illness or fatigue: I understand, both professionally and personally, how important pacing and proper exercise intensity is. The last thing I want to do is send someone into a flare! Learning how to walk that tightrope is all part of the personal training process and will always be the top priority in our work together.
What you can expect:
The first session is about getting to know each other, what your goals are, and any relevant health history (EDS, injuries, cardiac issues/POTS, etc.). We will talk about how you want to exercise (at a gym, in your home, at a park, etc.) and what would be most helpful for when to have our sessions (during the workout, between workouts, a mix of both). After that session, you will receive a workout plan from me with specific exercises and instructions as well as what each exercise does and how it relates to your goal.
After the initial session, we can meet as frequently as you need to feel confident in performing your workout plan. After the initial workout plan has become too easy (which will happen!), I will send you your second workout plan. We will do this for as many times as you need to meet your goals and make life as easy as possible.
